Maintaining sanity during the Christmas holiday season

005

Christmas Eve 2011.  Amidst the hustle and bustle of last minute holiday shopping, I am in a reflective mood.  So much to be thankful for.  In seasons past, I would get all wrapped up in the frenzy of gift buying, parties and decorating that I forgot what the true meaning of Christmas was all about.  Sure, I intellectually knew that it was a celebration of Jesus’ birth, and that our gift giving symbolizes God’s gift to us, but it was easy to lose that perspective amidst all the commercialism. I have always battled perfectionism, and I stressed over doing it all and doing it perfectly.  The holiday season would usually kick off my seasonal depression, which would typically last until the end of March, about the time spring break would begin.

Maybe because I’m getting older (and wiser?), or simply just tired of the craziness, but I’ve had a gradual change of heart.  Although I still have a lot learn, I think I am becoming more grateful about all that God has provided.  I believe thankfulness is a key component of the Christmas spirit, and it certainly keeps me sane during this time of the year.  I am most thankful for the gift of salvation God gave through His son Jesus Christ.  I am thankful for my wife, Donna, and my grown children, Rebekah, Elisabeth and Craig.   I am also grateful for my patients, many whom I consider friends.  My office staff, Liz, Tamika, Gina and Jeanette are the greatest.  The beautiful communities in North Idaho where I live and practice medicine mean a lot to me, and I consider the hard working and independent people that live here kindred spirits.

I have no excuse to complain with all these blessings.  Merry Christmas!…..Richard R Samuel, MD     Family Practice and Urgent Care   Hayden, ID  USA
