Warts are caused by Human Papilloma Virus and are frustratingly resistant to treatment. They occur when a person comes into contact with the virus, which usually enters through a break in the skin. Non genital warts can be painful, but usually do not cause any problems other than cosmetic, whereas the viral strains that cause genital warts can lead to cervical cancer in some women. Genital warts and cervical involvement always needs to be evaluated and managed by a health care provider. However, home remedies are reasonable first line options for warts located elsewhere. These include the use of salicylic acid patches and topical liquids such as Compound W, often covering the treated wart with tape and then filing it down each day after bathing. For resistant warts, I use Verruca Freeze in my office, which is an extremely cold, aerosolized liquid that freezes the growth.
