Please be careful with over-the-counter thyroid supplements. They usually contain large amounts of ground up pig/bovine thyroid and/or iodine, often in the form of kelp. Iodine is used by the thyroid to make thyroid hormone. These supplements are frequently misused by people in an attempt to increase energy, raise body temperature and lose weight.
However, there are many problems associated with their use. When abused, they can cause fatigue, weakness, diarrhea, anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure, tremor, sweating and/or heart rhythm problems. In severe cases, heart failure, stroke and even death can occur. Long term use can also thin the bones and lead to osteoporosis, increasing the risk of fracture. It can take months for the body to rid itself of iodine stores after stopping these supplements, and symptoms of thyroid excess can persist for quite some time.
