What is bruxism?

March 17, 2012

Bruxism is teeth grinding and/or clenching at nighttime.  A number of children and adults have this condition, which is frequently brought on by stress.  Other causes include misaligned teeth and ADHD.  Symptoms typically include headaches, facial pain, tenderness and/or clicking over the TMJ (jaw joint) and ear pain.  Examination usually shows worn teeth (see picture) and there is frequently tenderness over the TMJ.  Treatment includes a sports-type mouth piece, either over-the-counter or custom made by a dentist, and special exercises.  Occasionally, muscle relaxants are used to decrease clenching and improve sleep…..Richard R Samuel, MD    Family Practice and Urgent Care   Hayden, ID  USA
