Think about the last time you tried to see your doctor. You called, and the first opening was what, three weeks out for something that needed attention now? When you finally got in, you waited past your appointment time, and then you got rushed through a seven-minute visit while your doctor was probably already thinking about the next patient.
That is normal in American healthcare. But normal isn’t the same as good.
I’m Dr. Jenna Silakoski, and I own North Idaho Direct Primary Care right here in Hayden. In the next few minutes, I want to explain a different way that primary care can work. It’s called direct primary care, and by the end of this article you’ll understand what it is, why it’s so different, and exactly what it looks like to take that first step.
That first step is a free meet and greet, and it’s easier and lower pressure than you might think. I’ll walk you all the way through it.
Let me start with why the regular health system feels the way it does, because it’s not your imagination, and it’s not your doctor’s fault.
In traditional primary care, a single doctor is often responsible for 1,000 to 3,000 patients. Think about that number for a second. When you are one of 3,000, the math simply doesn’t leave room for time, or for a doctor who can really know you.
You can’t reach anyone between appointments, so a small question that pops up on a Tuesday just has to wait, sometimes for weeks or months, until it turns into a real problem. And when you can’t get in to see your own doctor, where do you end up? Urgent care. The emergency room. Places that are expensive, from hundreds to thousands of dollars, staffed by people who don’t know you. Your own doctor might have been able to handle the same thing in five minutes if you’d just been able to reach them.
If you have ever felt like a number instead of a person at the doctor’s office, you are not being dramatic. The system is built that way. Direct primary care was built to undo it.
Here’s the simple version. Direct primary care is a membership for your everyday healthcare, your primary and urgent care, for one flat monthly fee. In return, you get the thing most people don’t get from their doctor: time.
Because we keep our patient panels small on purpose, we can do a few things a rushed practice can’t:
This is what “care that has time for you” actually means in practice. You can meet the team and see how the model works before you commit to anything.
Your membership covers the bread-and-butter primary care most families need:
For the things we can’t do in-house but can get for you, like certain labs, imaging, or medications, you get them at our cost plus roughly 15 to 20 percent. In a lot of cases that works out to around 90 percent less than what you’d pay for the same thing on the outside.
We keep the flat monthly membership straightforward on purpose. You can see current rates and family options on our membership page.
The easiest way to see the difference is side by side. Same goal, very different experience.
None of this means traditional doctors aren’t good at their jobs. Most are excellent, and they’re stuck inside the same rushed model you are. Direct primary care just changes the model so the relationship has room to breathe.
This is the one question almost everyone asks, and the answer tends to surprise people.
No. Direct primary care is not insurance, and it is not meant to replace your insurance.
Think of it this way. DPC handles your everyday primary care, the checkups, the sick visits, the ongoing management, the quick questions. Your insurance is still there for the big things: hospital stays, surgeries, specialists, emergencies, and the unexpected, catastrophic costs. The two work alongside each other.
Most of our members keep their insurance (or a plan built to pair with this kind of care) and use their DPC membership for everything primary care covers. What changes is that your everyday care becomes dramatically easier to reach and easier to afford, which is the part that has been missing for so many people.
Direct primary care tends to be a great fit if you:
It’s also a strong option for local employers who want to offer a primary-care benefit their team will actually use. You can read more about DPC for employers if that’s you.
And because everything connects, you can start with everyday primary care and, when it makes sense, add focused support like hormone optimization, medical weight support, or functional medicine. As the first direct primary care practice in northern Idaho, we’ve had time to build all of it out.
What is direct primary care, in one sentence? It’s a membership for your everyday healthcare: a flat monthly fee that gives you direct access to your care team, longer visits, and clear pricing, instead of routing routine care through insurance billing.
Is direct primary care insurance? No. DPC is not insurance. It covers your primary and everyday care directly, while your insurance stays in place for hospital care, specialists, emergencies, and major costs.
Does direct primary care replace my insurance? No, it complements it. You’ll still want coverage for the big, unexpected things. DPC simply makes your day-to-day primary care easier to access and more affordable.
What does a DPC membership cost? It’s a flat monthly fee, with options for individuals and families. You can see current rates on our membership page.
Can I really get in same day? For acute issues, we can often see you same day or next day, and many quick questions can be handled with a direct message or text without an office visit at all.
Do you see families and kids? Yes. We care for individuals and families, with membership options for both adults and children.

I could keep describing direct primary care, but the best way to understand it is to experience it. That’s what the free meet and greet is for.
It’s exactly what it sounds like. There’s no exam, no pressure, and no commitment. You come in, meet a member of the team, ask your questions, and decide whether this is the right fit for you and your family. If you’ve spent years feeling rushed and unheard, this is a very different first step.
We’re North Idaho DPC in Hayden, and you can schedule a free meet and greet whenever you’re ready. Care that has time for you.
