Diabetic foot ulcers

A diabetic foot ulcer is one of the complications of uncontrolled diabetes.  It is critically important that diabetics check their feet every day for blistering, areas of redness and breaks in the skin.  An immediate visit to a physician is mandatory if any of those findings are present, as untreated sores usually get infected and progress quite rapidly, ultimately involving the deep soft tissues and the bone.  Since blood flow in the feet is poor in diabetics, healing is very difficult once the infection has progressed, and foot amputation is often the only cure.

Of concern is the large number of people who have diabetes and are not even aware of it.  Individuals that are overweight and/or have a family history of diabetes have a higher risk of developing the disease, and should promptly see their physician for an examination and labwork to rule out this common disorder…Richard R.
