Bladder infection prevention and symptoms

Dr. Jenna from North Idaho DPC

Bladder infection is common, especially among women.  If left untreated, it may progress to the more serious kidney infection.  Practical tips for women to decrease infection frequency include increasing fluid intake, urinating immediately after intercourse, acidifying the urine with a vitamin C tablet once or twice a day, not delaying  bathroom breaks long after the initial urge to urinate, wiping from front to back, and avoiding diaphragms, douching, hot tubs and bubble baths.

Despite taking the above measures, many women will still get symptoms, which include pain with urination, sudden urge to urinate, frequent and small amounts of urination, low back pain, pubic pressure and/or blood in the urine.  It is reasonable to try cranberry capsules or juice for mild cases.  However, if symptoms persist, recur or are more severe, especially if accompanied by fever, nausea and/or severe back pain, a visit to your primary care provider is recommended.
